Mobile phone charging station

Another service the Hubs provide is the recharging of mobile phones. As mobile phones got increasingly important over the past years in Africa and the demand for off-grid charging solutions was rising accordingly, the rural population developed charging centers, where batteries are charged with electricity produced by small diesel generators. However, the use of imported fuel and the lack of alternatives make this service expensive and therefore communication for an already economically poorer rural population prohibitive. At the WE!Hubs, people can recharge their mobile phones for an affordable charging fee. An alternative, which also initiated the development of small businesses, is the possibility of recharging mobile phones using the O-Boxes. The entrepreneurs rent several O-Boxes from the Hubs, take them to remote areas, where they are able to charge mobile phones for a small fee.
